Runner under the blubber

Oh so many years ago I weighed 240 lbs.  I'd been a distance runner in my teens, and loved the feeling of moving fast under my own power.  After a terrible heatwave and a possible episode of heatstroke, I quit running.  I started to put on weight, but still maintained a normal size...

  However,
  • I got married,
  • got fat,
  • got gout                                                                                                                                        THEN I got sick
  • got divorced
  • got fit
  • got fast

I lost 90 lbs over the course of a year.  I ended up being one of the best runners of my age in my state.

Fast forward to 2002 when I moved to France.  Age started slowing me down, and the competition in my age group was much more fierce than in Missouri.  I got married again, but continued to train, however, another heatwave and a baby boy put an end to my serious training.  Now 11years later though I haven't ballooned back up to 240 lbs, 114 kg,  The desire to run is still there.  The love of moving fast is imprinted in my brain.  I've experimented with orienteering and whitewater kayaking as replacements for my fix, and they have allowed me to maintain a minimal level of fitness. Due to my age, injuries plague me these days, and I feel I am almost constantly in recovery mode.

I have started running again.  This time with Jean-Loup.  It's fun, keeps me from running too fast, and allows me to build up slowly.  I'm hoping it will continue and we can get in shape together.  Competition again? I don't know. I'd love to, but my glory days are far behind me.
